We’ve all been there: too much information and not enough time. How can we possibly inspire authentic active learning in a one-shot session? The solution: stop talking and start teaching! In this workshop, you will experience practical active learning strategies that work--even in a 50-minute session. From collaborating with faculty to planning, conducting, and assessing, librarians will learn that one-shot instruction can not only be highly effective, but also fun.

Learners will participate in an online jigsaw activity that explores active learning techniques, engage with selected readings, participate in online discussions, plan instruction that is meaningful and relevant to students, and discover the power of classroom assessment techniques.

Beth McDonough is an Assistant Professor and Education Librarian for Western Carolina University. She is in the final stages of an Ed.D. in Leadership of Curriculum and Instruction, also from Western Carolina University. Prior to her career in academic librarianship, Beth was a school librarian for more than a decade, and is Nationally-Board Certified in Early Childhood though Young Adult Library Media. She has more than 20 years’ experience teaching information literacy.
