Transitioning from Cataloging to Creating Metadata

ALCTS webinar

February 27, 2013
All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11am Pacific, noon Mountain, 1pm Central, and 2pm Eastern time.

Description: The instructors will begin with an overview of why catalogers need to consider transitioning from providing traditional cataloging services to providing metadata and will then address how to transition existing staff into the role of metadata providers. They will identify competencies of technical services staff, focusing on the skills needed to provide metadata, and will also discuss how to sell these skills to possible project collaborators. They will discuss training needed to build and broaden those skills, as well as possible stumbling blocks. The value of collaboration with other departments and institutions in creating successful and sustainable metadata projects will be highlighted. The presentation material will draw examples from the experiences of the instructors in transitioning their own! staff and colleagues to the world of metadata

Learning outcomes: Provide managers and staff in technical services with the information needed to successfully transition from traditional cataloging to the creation of metadata and to identify specific skills that will help them remain relevant in the modern bibliographic world of metadata.
Who should attend? Managers and staff in leadership roles within cataloging departments. All technical services librarians and staff in academic, special and large public libraries would benefit.
Presenters:
Teressa Keenan is the Interim Head of Bibliographic Management Services in the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library at the University of Montana. She has participated in panel discussions and written on the topics involving cataloging, metadata, & workflow efficiency. She has trained staff in both cataloging traditional library materials and in providing descriptive metadata for image and textual materials and was a key participant in the development of the BIBCO Standard Record for visual materials.
