The
Future for Libraries: A guide for new professionals
The New
Professionals series begins next Thursday, April 11 at 1:00pm EST with a
conversation between Eli Neiburger, Associate Director for IT and Production at
the Ann Arbor District Library, Jason Kucsma, METRO's Executive Director, and
Davis Erin Anderson, METRO's Community Engagement Manager. In this session, Eli
will share insights into how libraries and librarians can -- and must -- adapt
to an increasingly digital future. As one of the foremost futurists in the
field today, Eli's insights have been featured in Library Journal's first-ever
virtual ebook summit in 2010 and in keynote addresses for the Lake Superior
Library System, the Connecticut Library System, and the upcoming Oregon Virtual
Reference Summit. His book, GAMERS...in
the LIBRARY?! was published in 2007 by ALA Editions.

Librarianship
as an 'Avocational Vocation:' Advice for new professionals
On
Wednesday, April 24, Char Booth, Instruction Services Manager and E-Learning
Librarian at the Claremont Colleges, will join us for "Librarianship as an
'Avocational Vocation' - Advice for new professionals." This webinar will
feature Char in discussion with Jason Kucsma on Char’s innovative work to
expand outreach and interaction with Claremont's patrons, as well as her
experiences as an educator. As her book Reflective Teaching, Effective Learning: Instructional Literacy

The
third part in the New Professionals series, features Elisabeth Doucett, author
of Creating
Your Library Brand: Communicating Your Relevance and Value to Your Patrons
(published by the American Library Association in 2008) and What They Don't Teach You in Library School
(published by ALA in 2011). With METRO Career Consultant Ellen Mehling, this
webinar will feature Liz's perspectives on the transition between grad school
and the working world, career planning, staying on top of trends in the field,
thriving in new environments, and how to thrive in your first management role.

Your Library Career: Finding, and Getting, Your Ideal Job
Advice
gleaned from these three webinars will be put into practice in a pair of
in-person workshops on Tuesday, May 21, 2013. Led by ACRL/NY's Carrie Netzer
Wajda and Susanne Markgren, "Launch Your Library Career: Finding, and
Getting, Your Ideal Job" is designed to bring recent graduates, new
professionals, and those in career transition up to speed on successfully
navigating a job search in today’s market. Participants will build a set of
deliverables that will assist them throughout the process of landing a job in
the field. Part I: Preparing Yourself, and Your Materials, for the Challenge
will take place from 10am till 1pm, and Part II: Creating and Managing a
Professional Online Presence is scheduled from 2pm till 4pm. Register for Part
