appropriate.

Dates: May 14 through June 11, 2013
Credits: 1.5 CEUs
Price: $175
Librarians and library workers regularly encounter
copyright issues in their work but often lack either sufficient understanding
of the law or confidence in their understanding to know how to proceed. This
class is designed for anyone who works in libraries who feels they could
benefit from brushing up on copyright or who wants to feel more confident in
their responses to copyright-related questions and issues. We will cover
copyright basics, including the history and purpose of copyright, and look at
copyright issues specific to libraries. We’ll look at the common limitations
and exceptions to copyright, including fair use and classroom use. Participants
are encouraged to bring specific questions and scenarios, but are not required
to have any previous experience with or prior knowledge of copyright.
Rachel Bridgewater is a faculty librarian at Portland
Community College in Portland, Oregon. Rachel serves as the college’s copyright
librarian, providing copyright interpretation and support for the college community
and planning educational activities and outreach about copyright. Rachel
regularly presents and teaches about copyright and other information policy
issues both locally and nationally. In addition to her work at PCC, she teaches
part-time for Emporia State University’s School of Library and Information
Management. Rachel received her MLS from Emporia in 2004.
