A basic class in cataloging. Principles such as cataloging codes (AACR2 and RDA) will be examined along with how they are used to select information from print sources for documentation. This information will then be coded into the MARC format so it can be entered and stored as well as shared among library automation systems. The basic role of authority records will also be covered. Print materials only will be covered in this course.
At the completion of this course, the attendee will be able to:
- Understand the basic principles of AACR2 and RDA and how they correlate and are different from each other.
- The concept of FRBR and its framework for library organization.
- Commercial and non-commercial sources for cataloging records.
- How information generated during the cataloging process is encoded into the MARC21 format for storage and sharing.
- What role authority records play in the cataloging process.
This course can be taken as one of seven courses needed to earn our Certificate in Cataloging, but can be taken as a stand-alone course as well.
