Internet safety can be a tricky subject to teach. It is an
essential skill to include in basic digital literacy instruction, but
determining what content to include and how to teach it can present many
challenges. Information about Internet safety, computer security, and online
privacy can change on a regular basis, making it difficult to design curriculum
and teach classes without a fear of becoming outdated.
Internet safety instruction doesn’t have to be difficult,
though! This session will share best practices for teaching Internet safety in
group and individual settings to patrons in public libraries and nonprofit
organizations. We will hear from the Monroe County Public Library (Indiana)
about the types of Internet safety instruction they have been offering, and how
they approach teaching this topic. We will also share tips for how to use and
adapt existing instructional materials that are freely available to ensure that
the information presented is accurate and up to date.
This webinar is part of a series of webinars highlighting
public technology instruction. Each webinar will explore a different topic or
aspect of teaching tech in public libraries, and will provide practical tips
for libraries of all sizes.
