Shrinking budgets and decreasing commitment to support diverse public
institutions are resulting in shortcuts that consolidate very different
types of materials. Librarians increasingly find themselves responsible
for archival and manuscript materials. This course treats the
administration and management of archives and manuscript collections
with special consideration of the librarian who finds herself in the
role of archivist, as well.
The six-week course will include practical and hands-on assignments. We
will discuss the theoretical principles upon which archival work is
based, and the key practices of archival work: appraisal, acquisition,
accessioning, arrangement, description, preservation, and use. We will
touch upon the purposes and structure of records management programs,
legal and ethical issues, public programming and advocacy, and the
impact of new information technologies and electronic records upon
archival practice.
