Jun: Making Your Maker Space: Building for Hands-on Learning in Libraries (Library Journal)

Wednesday, June 18, 2014
3:00 PM - 4:00 PM ET / 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM PT

Libraries around the world are undergoing considerable changes in response to the ever evolving technological landscape and patron needs. Maker Spaces are surfacing constantly and forcing libraries to examine their role in hands-on learning.
But what does this mean and how does a library plan well and for the future?
Our panel of experts will explore hands-on learning in the library and provide both practical and big picture advice on creating a design plan that meets your community’s unique needs. We’ll look at different kinds of spaces, including indoor and outdoor, underutilized areas, nontraditional mobile or pop spaces and ones that serve multi-purpose needs. We’ll explore Maker Spaces that support audio, craft, music, gardening and more.  We’ll discuss strategies for engaging external partners and spend time looking at furnishings to support needs.
Whether a novice or newbie, you will gain insights and ideas from experienced architects and furniture and product professionals to help you create a strategy for your library.
