This course will focus on the practical mechanics of metadata, beginning
with a survey of current metadata standards and practices and the
evaluation of effective metadata at use in different information
environments. Students will learn the mechanics of metadata by designing
a metadata schema to support a specific user community and information
need. Students will build a metadata registry, design controlled
vocabularies, and construct an XML schema to document their metadata.
Students will learn to develop and apply an application profile for a
commonly used metadata schema to support a specific digital collection.
The course will also introduce students to emerging metadata standards
and protocols, such as linked data and paradata. At the end of the
course, students will be able to effectively design and apply metadata
to meet their institution's needs.
