MBA in a Day – Finance Thursday, May 15, 2014 2:00 - 3:30 PM

This webinar is adapted from a previously offered, full-day Preconference.  It’s designed for new business librarians, generalists who have assumed responsibility in business librarianship, or librarians who handle business reference-related inquiries in all types of libraries including academic, public and special libraries. There are four sessions in total: Accounting, Finance, Marketing, and Management. Each session will provide librarians with a broad conceptual understanding of business topics in that business discipline (concepts are emphasized over sources).

Attendance of all four sessions is not required.  Each session is self-contained.

Marketing
Marketing is happening all around us, all the time. We know it is important, but do we understand it? This webinar does not focus on information sources or research tools, nor is it a workshop on library marketing. Instead, it teaches the concepts and principles that underlie business patrons’ needs and library promotional efforts, but are often not clearly understood.
Management
Management crosses disciplines and industries. It includes Planning, Organizing, Staffing, Leading, Evaluating, Reporting, Budgeting, and Innovating. This webinar does not focus on information sources or research tools.
Accounting
Accounting is often called the language of business. Having a basic understanding of accounting can be very helpful in understanding an organization’s finances and in answering business reference questions. This webinar does not focus on information sources or research tools. Instead, “MBA in a Day: Accounting” will provide a basic understanding how accounting statements work by showing the accounting entries used for a sample business over the course of a year.
Finance
The field of finance can be separated into three major branches: corporate or managerial finance, capital markets and investments. . This webinar does not focus on information sources or research tools. Instead, “MBA in a Day: Finance” will focus on concepts from all three of these areas, with emphasis on concepts that are most useful to a librarian in public and academic libraries who must provide business reference. The session will cover topics such as financial theories, risk and reward, company financials, industry ratios, equity markets.
