In early 2013, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) directed Federal agencies with more than $100M in R&D Expenditures to develop plans to make federally funded research openly available to the public within one year of publication.
Partly in response to this directive, university and library groups partnered to develop the SHared Access Research Ecosystem (SHARE) to promote the preservation of, access to, and reuse of scholarly research. Similarly, publishers, scholarly societies, and service providers came together to create the Clearinghouse for the Open Research of the United States (CHORUS) to increase public access to peer-reviewed publications that report on federally funded research. With similar missions and goals, how might the two groups might work together to promote access to research? Where do they overlap, and how do they differ? And how might individual librarians get involved with these efforts?
