May: Media Rising: Bringing Audiovisual Collections Back to Life (SCA)
Thursday May 8th, 9:00am-5:00pm
Society of California Archivists Annual General Meeting
Renaissance Palm Springs Hotel
Do you have film, video or audio recordings tucked away on a dark shelf in your collections? Silently waiting to return to the light of day? Consider attending this all-day workshop! Spaces are still available.
Media collections are seriously endangered by physical deterioration, lack of playback equipment and rapidly advancing format obsolescence. Most experts believe there is a short 15 to 20 year window of opportunity to preserve analog recordings. On top of the challenges of the physical material, there are additional challenges of low funding, limited resources in staffing and a shortage of "real" time. Preservation can be intimidating, including addressing metadata needs, potential rights issues and the technological complexities of audiovisual materials and the digitization process.
How can we overcome these daunting challenges? What are the basic steps to process media collections? How do we navigate the permissions process when an audiovisual work may have numerous rights holders? Following this year’s AGM theme “Archives and the Public”, this workshop will cover not only the challenges of preserving media but also the potential rewards of providing online access. It will include opportunities to handle, inspect and catalog a variety of audiovisual formats. We will discuss current best practices, from assessment to cataloging to digitization to quality control to long-term storage, to help you feel more comfortable with audiovisual materials and address their preservation needs.
After attending this workshop, you’ll understand:
• Best practices for preserving audiovisual materials,
• Their preservation needs,
• How to assess and catalog audiovisual materials.
Registration is limited to 35 people.
Fees:
SCA Member $75
Nonmember $90
Student (with copy of ID) $50
