Getting Started with GIS

Upcoming Web Education Offering from LITA

Presented by Eva Dodsworth (University of Waterloo Map Library) February 11- March 4, 2013
Getting Started with GIS is a three week course modeled on Eva Dodsworth's LITA Guide of the same name. The course will consist of a combination of recorded lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on tutorials. Created specifically for library staff, this course will provide students with an introduction to the both online and desktop GIS currently being used by library administrators, librarians, library support staff and library users.
Participants will learn firsthand how to create online maps; how to properly use maps in library webpages; how to embed GIS technology into library projects (and the benefits of it!); and how to enjoy GIS and mapping technologies in personal endeavors. Students will be exposed to many online resources that are currently being used by public, academic and special libraries across North America. No previous mapping or GIS experience is necessary.

Getting Started with GIS will consist of asynchronous weekly lectures, tutorials, assignments, and group discussion. There will be one 80 minute lecture to view each week, along with two tutorials and one assignment that will take 1-3 hours to complete, depending on the student.

Fundamentals of Acquisitions

ALCTS Web Course: Fundamentals of Acquisitions
Next session: March 11 - April 5, 2013

This is a four-week online course that focuses on the basics of library acquisitions:
- goals and methods of acquiring monographs and serials
- financial management of library collections budgets
- relationships among acquisitions librarians, library booksellers, subscription agents, and publishers.

This course provides a broad overview of the operations involved in acquiring materials after the selection decision is made.
In FOA, we distinguish between collection development, which involves the selection of materials for the library; and acquisitions, which orders, receives, and pays for those materials. In many libraries, selecting and acquiring materials may be done in the same department—in the smallest libraries perhaps even by the same person. In larger libraries, selection may be done by a collection development department and/or designated subject specialists, while a separate department acquires the selected materials. Acquisitions, in essence, is the business side of bringing materials into the library or licensing access to library resources.
This course is one-third of the Collection Management Elective course approved by the Library Support Staff Certification Program (LSSCP).
Registration Fees:  $109 ALCTS Member and  $129 Non-member

This informative webinar will take place live on January 30, 2013 at 6:00 PM EST. It will also be available on the Lumos Learning website following the live presentation. Register today to avoid missing out on this exciting opportunity to move your library towards serving the students and parents of your community. To register: http://lumoslearning.com/a/webinar.
