Jun: Evolving World of Course Content as a Service (ACRL)

June 3, 2014
11 a.m. Pacific (90 min)

Description: As libraries work to respond to the evolving higher education environment, new roles continue to grow and develop.  The growing focus in Higher Education on student affordability issues and eLearning provide opportunities related to alternative course content and the services to support this new content environment.  This webcast will focus on two illustrations of this evolving field.  First, Kristi Jensen from the University of Minnesota Libraries will speak on efforts to collaborate with campus partners from the Bookstore, the Copyright Permissions Center, and Academic Technology Support Services to identify new methods and strategies for acquiring and delivering course content including:
  • a program focused on strategies and support for the adoption of open textbooks
  • support for further development of the Open Academics Library to allow for easy discovery of vetted open textbooks and use or revision of these materials
  • the streamlining of processes related to discovery, acquisition, and delivery of course content for both faculty and students on campus
  • the development of online digital course packs that can be easily integrated into websites and the campus course management system
  • and support services for digital course packs covering open educational resources, licensed library content, Fair Use materials, faculty materials, and copyrighted materials requiring payment.
Second, Nicole Allen of SPARC, the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition, will speak about Open Educational Resources (OER) as the ideal framework for publishing educational content. After a decade of leading the movement for Open Access, SPARC is expanding into OER in response to the growing opportunities for libraries around alternative course content.  Numerous other libraries in addition to the U of M are expanding into the curation and creation of OER, and SPARC is developing networks and resources to support these practices.
Throughout the webcast, attendees will be polled on various perceptions relating to digital content, eLearning and OER.  The presenters will also promote a parallel conversation through Twitter, soliciting questions and feedback before, during and after the event.
