Many metadata programs have moved beyond the beginning stages of developing workflows for digital library content. Planning for future development requires analyzing current costs and workflows. This program will discuss ways in which metadata creators and coordinators gather, assess, and report metrics in order to evaluate staffing and workflows.
Session 3: Techniques and Technologies for Developing Local Controlled Vocabularies (June 4)
Best practices for managing local controlled vocabularies have grown rapidly in recent years with the development of standards such as the Encoded Archival Context-Corporate Bodies, Person and Families (EAC-CPF). These guidelines have influenced not only the development of special collections practices, but also metadata standards for localized controlled vocabularies. How should institutions handle these changes to stay up to date with new and emerging standards? Most presentations concerning data management do not provide practical advice on how to consult with researchers writing a data management plan for grant submission. This course teaches participants about the elements of a successful data management plan, and provides practice critiquing data management plans in a supportive learning environment where no grant funding is at stake. The shift to a digital context has transformed scientific communication deeply. The rapid and enormous growth in computing power has also led science itself to approach reality in new ways. Both trends stand behind the rise of open science and open data.
The Open Access movement has already transformed the publishing of research results: new business models, new forms of dissemination, new retrieval tools, and new preservation strategies. It is also beginning to affect the ways in which scientific work is being evaluated. Finally, the emergence of open access to published articles has foregrounded the importance of machine reading whenever vast quantities of documents have to be treated: with it, retrieving, re-using, remixing and reorganizing knowledge can proceed much more efficiently.
The growth in computing power amounts to an epistemological transformation that builds upon the logical revolution initiated in classical antiquity, and upon the experimental method which forms a crucial element of the "Scientific Revolution". Model building is fast becoming the approach of choice for an ever greater proportion of scientific problems. However, model building requires easy access to large amounts of data. These data sets must be organized, curated and made to work across laboratories and disciplines. Issues of replicability and verifiability are at stake in this context.
In conclusion, the computer and the Internet are transforming science in profound ways, and open science and data testify to this fact. This double shift is sufficiently momentous to be compared to the invention of writing and of printing.

In part 3, we’ll explore consumer data collected by the bureau that’s reported in its section called BLS Statistics on Spending and Time Use. The BLS collects data on where and how much consumers spend their money and their time. For instance, how much money do Hispanic families spend on groceries? How much time do married mothers and married fathers spend on household and childcare activities? How has time use or spending patterns changed over time? These survey results provide a treasure-trove of data for marketers.
