July-Aug: New Librarianship Master Class

Libraries have existed for millennia, but today the library field is searching for solid footing in an increasingly fragmented (and increasingly digital) information environment. What is librarianship when it is unmoored from cataloging, books, buildings, and committees?  The vision for a new librarianship must go beyond finding library-related uses for information technology and the Internet; it must provide a durable foundation for the field. New Librarianship recasts librarianship and library practice using the fundamental concept that knowledge is created though conversation. New librarians approach their work as facilitators of conversation; they seek to enrich, capture, store, and disseminate the conversations of their communities.

The class is oriented towards professionals with some experience in librarianship (including paraprofessionals). A background in librarianship is not required, but recommended.

To participate in the class is free. If you wish to receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) there is a $150 fee for 2.0 CEUs, payable upon completion of the course. To take the course for graduate credit you will be charged the graduate tuition rate of $1294/credit hour for the 3 credit course and receive a 20% course tuition award courtesy of the iSchool at SU. Those taking the course for graduate credit will complete additional coursework through the month of August.

Therefore, it is necessary that these students be of high quality and well-trained. This course is based upon the premise that a student's work in the library should be seen as part of his or her overall development as a learner and a complete individual. With that philosophy in mind, this course will teach you specific tools and methods to evaulate and improve your current process of hiring, training and developing your student staff. Specifically, the focus will be on methods and processes to help you hire the best students possible, clearly communicate your expectations to your student staff, measure their progress and ability while finding ways to motivate and engage them. Readings will be provided during the course.

Course objectives:

- Understand the role that student staff play in the functioning of your library.

- Recognize and clearly articulate what a dedicated approach to student staff training and development looks like in your library.

- Develop a comprehensive student training and development plan, as applicable to your particular library staff situation.

- Create new or tweak existing hiring, training and other procedures related to the training of student staff.

- Work with other librarians to learn from their experiences and knowledge.

WordPress Basics

This two-part online class will be held on March 14 and 21, 2013 from 1:00 - 2:00 pm. Students must attend both sessions.

According to Forbes Magazine, “WordPress powers one of every 6 websites on the Internet, nearly 60 million in all, with 100,000 more popping up each day” (http://goo.gl/49F1U). This powerful Content Management System (CMS) allows users with little technical skill to set-up, design and manage websites. 
During the course, attendees will:

• Tour the back-end of a WordPress Site
• Learn how to do basic editing, including adding/editing media and adding and deleting pages
• Adding Plugins and Widgets - and explore the "essential" plugins for any site
• Explore the administrative abilities of WordPress
• Customize your dashboard
• Install and manage themes
• Customize menus and more
• Add, edit and manage users

Between classes, attendees will each be asked to work on a web project useful to them or work within a practice WordPress site created for the class. One-on-one assistance with the instructor will be provided during this time.
This class will be delivered online. Log-in information will be emailed approximately one week before the course.

Diana Silveira is the President of Novare Library Services. Novare Library Services provides training to libraries and their end-users, web-development and technology infrastructure to libraries. Before Novare Library Services, Diana was the Virtual Manager of Florida's Ask a Librarian, a statewide LSTA project helping over 70,000 residents via live chat, email and text messaging. She has an MLIS from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. When not playing with gadgets and gizmos, she enjoys diving, kayaking and other water-related fun.

Locating, Creating, Licensing and Utilizing OERs

State University of New York (SUNY) is offering an outstanding online OER course starting Wednesday January 23. The class is free and open to all. Registration starts today January 16.

OER-101: Locating, Creating, Licensing and Utilizing OERs is a self-paced online community course that has been built to demonstrate how to find, adapt, and develop OERs step-by-step. These OERs may then be licensed via Creative Commons, printed and bound, and integrated into any type of learning environment.
The course is organized into five “pursuits,” each of which represents one facet of the world of OERs.  Participants are encouraged to complete all of the pursuits by following the suggested course progression, but each pursuit can also be completed individually.

For evaluation and feedback, OER-101 will employ a badging system powered by Mozilla Open Badges.  The exploration of badging within the course is funded by a SUNY Innovative Instruction Technology Grant. Participants will earn badges by completing the course pursuits and will receive a ‘master badge’ for course completion.  Additionally, OER-101 will utilize a community learning model informed by a facilitation method established by Philyse Banner at the American Public University System.

The results from this course will be documented within the SUNY Learning Commons.
