All libraries need some regular weeding, but many of us don't know where to start. An important but often overlooked part of collection development, deaccessioning materials is a vital way to keep your library's collection useful for your institution. This four week course will provide, through readings and exercises, guidance on how to focus a library's collection and identify where to prune and what to keep. We will explore how to keep faculty (moderately) happy during the weeding process, and what to do with the downsized materials once the decision to deaccession has been made. Students will develop principles on maintaining a manageable library collection during the course which will guide their institution well into the future, while also learning about the mechanics involved in a weeding project.

Although not glamorous, weeding is a necessary aspect of keeping the library collection both healthy and responsive to current and future community needs. Unfortunately, because of uncertainties about how to begin, weeding is often misunderstood and almost as often neglected. Suitable for library staff at every level, this course is designed to move you beyond uncertainty about how to get started and keep you motivated to continue weeding by providing you with:
•    The basic tenets of a sound weeding plan
•    A clear understanding of the connections between collection development and collection weeding
•    Practical assistance in identifying weeding decisions related to print, multimedia, and online library collections
•    How to communicate appropriately and effectively about weeding with those in and beyond the library

Jun: Weeding made easy (Washington State Library)

Collection Manager is a free Excel spreadsheet that analyzes three reports from your automation system, i.e., number of items in each library collection, last year's circulation for each collection, number of titles added to each collection during the past year, to recommend which collections to weed, which collections to expand by buying more titles this year than last year, which collections to buy fewer titles, and even how many titles to purchase in each collection. Chris Rippel will demonstrate how to use Collection Manager and how to interpret the results.
