Teens and Tweens Go Green: Art-based and Eco-friendly Programs for Libraries

Teens and pre-teens appreciate and celebrate the environment. You can support their interests by involving them in hands-on programs with environmentally responsible themes. This course will bring the fun back into your programming! You will learn to:

·         Rethink “art” and look at everyday objects in new ways

·         Discover methods and materials for reusing, recycling, and repurposing

·         Demonstrate and teach art skills

·         Plan programs and events that are art-based and eco-friendly

Evaluating Library Services, Programs, and Collections

Year For Productivity: Introduction

Mary Axford and Crystal Renfro, two of the three authors of the Academic PKM blog (http://academicpkm.org), are pleased to announce a new, FREE online course called “A Year to Improved Productivity for Librarians and Academic Researchers”. The course will consist of 26 lessons; one lesson will be posted every two weeks on our blog. Inspired by Helene Blowers’ 23 Things and created from an idea by Crystal Renfro, each lesson will consist of background on the topic, suggested readings, and exercises. Each lesson should not take more than an hour or two to complete.

What will be covered?
The lessons fall into one of three sections: (1) How to Improve Productivity, with lessons including What is PKM, Attention and Focus, Calendars, Productivity Apps, and Notebook software; (2) How to Create an Efficient Academic Workflow, with lessons including the Concept of Academic Workflow, Citation Software, Alerting Services, and Mindmaps; and (3) How to Develop a Learning Network, which includes lessons What is a Learning Network, Which Social Network Tool is for You, Effective Online Professional Image; and Tools Facilitating Further Training to name only a few of the topics planned.

Landing Your Ideal Library Job

SJSU Career Center Liaison Joins Panel to Discuss the Library Job Market

The recently launched free streaming video broadcast from American Libraries, AL Live, is diving into the topic that is weighing on the minds of many future and current librarians in its second episode. “Landing Your Ideal Library Job” focuses on the library job market and the challenges that librarians at all points in their careers are facing in navigating it.

Host David Connolly, who is the manager of the ALA JobLIST site, will be joined by panel members Jill Klees, Career Center Liaison to the School of Library and Information Science at San Jose State University, and Bohyun Kim, Digital Access Librarian at Florida International University Medical Library.

As the San Jose State University Career Center Liaison, Klees is the go-to person for all things career related. In addition to providing career guidance to SJSU School of Library and Information Science graduate students, she coordinates the Career Colloquium Series and oversees the plethora of Career Development resources available for free on the SLIS website: http://slisweb.sjsu.edu.
