Oct: Podcasts: What Are They and What Role Can Librarians Play? (ALCTS)

Wednesday, October 15, 2014
11 am Pacific | 12 Mountain | 1 pm Central | 2 pm Eastern

Podcasts are free radio shows—like those on National Public Radio (NPR). One can listen to podcasts at any time in any place. Imagine hitting "play" and listening to NPR shows while commuting, waiting on line, or doing chores. But podcasts are not limited to shows on NPR—they include shows and stories not found on TV, online, in print, or on the radio.

The main themes of this webinar are that podcasts have unique and useful scholarly and leisurely material that is easy to access and that librarians can be on the front lines of organizing and marketing them. Librarians will take away marketing and organizing ideas they can implement immediately, as well as ideas about marketing and organizing this relatively unknown medium in the future.

Sep: Copyright Issues for Growing Digital Collections (ALCTS)

Wednesday, September 3, 2014
11 am Pacific | 12 Mountain | 1 pm Central | 2 pm Eastern

Presenter will share experiences working with a legal services department at an academic campus. After eighteen months of getting no signed copyrights transferred to the university from authors and copyright holders, she was able to convince the legal heads that what was really needed was a form in which authors and copyright holders would give them permission to digitize their works to share freely with the world, but retain their copyright. Once they instituted their own nonexclusive, royalty-free form, they were able to get permissions to grow their digital collections by more than eight hundred articles and books. Presenter will also cover how she located copyright holders and will share the types of permissions she was successful in obtaining, including heirs, government research authors, small publishing companies, and individual authors.

Sep: Essential Tools for Library Management in the Digital Age (ACRL)

September 9, 11am-12pm Pacific

Yesterday’s managers learned the basics of management alongside how to manage a variety of types and sizes of libraries. Today’s managers must not only learn the basics and managing by library types and sizes, but also how to recognize change in and of itself, determine how the organization and umbrella institution identifies and manages change, and—most importantly—exist and prosper in today’s and tomorrow’s continually changing environments. To meet this challenge, managers need tools to help position their library for excellence. Five tools can provide avenues for success within the organizational structure:

• defining or “profiling” employees, workers, constituents, peers as well as individuals in the umbrella structure;
• case methods and scenarios;
• visuals such as grids, charts, graphs and mapping;
• data-gathering focusing on outcomes to illustrate meaningful value of expertise, services, resources and facilities;
• and, carefully chosen terminology to articulate that data and directions.|

Julie Todaro, an ACRL Past-President and author of Library Management for the Digital Age: A New Paradigm, will help us think how to act on each of these steps in ways that fit each library’s individual needs.

Aug: How the Digital Skills Gap is Killing Your Team's Productivity - And What You Can Do About It (TrainingMagNetwork)

Tuesday, August 19, 2014
Time: 10 AM Pacific / 1 PM Eastern (60-Minute Session)

The digital skills gap is hardly news to American workers. Of the more than 200 million adults in the US digital workforce, only one in 10 consider themselves very proficient with the digital tools they use every day. As companies move quickly to adopt new cloud-based platforms, such as Microsoft Office 365, Google Apps, and Adobe Creative Cloud, as well as new types of tools for marketing, analytics, communications, and more, employees and managers are hard-pressed to fit digital skills training into jam-packed schedules and tight budgets.

Meanwhile, a recent study by Deloitte found that the rapid pace of technological change in the workplace is leading to a skills half-life of just 2.5 years. Even the most adept employee can quickly fall behind - and workers, businesses, and the entire economy are paying the price.

Every year, the digital skills gap drives a loss of nearly $1 trillion for the US economy. For a firm with 1,000 employees, this translates to a $10 million loss each year on a compensation basis alone.

But we need not stand idly by as our organizations bleed productivity. By laying out the 8 core competencies of digital skills, this webinar provides an action plan for addressing the digital skills gap in your team.
