May: Embedded Librarianship

The role of the embedded librarian takes many forms - in learning communities, community organizations, support groups and businesses. Embedded librarianship can include team teaching a course, becoming an important part of a local film/art/music festival, or integration of library resources into a school curriculum or an organization’s event. This asynchronous, online course will discuss best practices and tools for working as an embedded librarian. We will explore how to initiate a collaborative relationship with faculty or community organizations, and also teach you how to partner with them for better student or event success. Participants will learn how to improve relationships with faculty and organizations and become an integral part of the curriculum, event, or program of study. We will also discuss how to use emerging technologies in embedded librarianship as communication and collaborative tools.

Courtney Mlinar is the Academic Support Services / Reference Librarian and Webmaster for the HPD Library at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She is the Liaison Librarian for the Colleges of Dental Medicine, Pharmacy and Optometry. She is a frequent presentor at conferences; recent presentations include “Medicine is Mobile”, “Medical Mobile Apps”, and “HPD Liaison Librarians” for NSU HPD Faculty Developments.

April: Open Education, MOOCs, and Student Access

Join the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources and CCC Confer on April 30, 10:00 am Pacific for a panel discussion on rebooting California’s higher education system with Open Education, MOOCs, and an online Student Access Platform.

The California legislature, responding to shrinking budgets and huge wait lists for gateway courses, has proposed:
•Open textbooks
•Credit for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)
•The California Online Student Access Platform
Three leaders in the field share their thoughts on this revolution in higher education. What are the next steps for ensuring the success of our students? How do we continue the prominence of California’s institutions of higher
education?

Dean Florez, CEO of the Twenty Million Minds Foundation, and former majority leader of the California senate, has been a driving force behind the new legislation and instrumental in bringing stakeholders and MOOC thought leaders together to reboot higher education in California.
Dr. Barbara Illowsky, Mathematics professor and open textbook faculty co-author at De Anza Community College. An early developer of open educational resources to make college affordable, Dr. Illowsky has continued to push for digital interactivity to improve student learning outcomes. In fall 2013, she plans to teach an introductory, descriptive, not-for-credit statistics MOOC.Dr. Michelle Pilati, Psychology professor at Rio Hondo College and current president of the CCC Academic Senate has been closely involved with the implementation strategy for the new legislation to set up an Open Educational Resources (OER) Council containing faculty representatives from the three public higher education systems.

June-July: Creating Effective Surveys

An Infopeople online course, June 18 to July 15, 2013

Surveys are one of the most popular and well-known ways to collect information about what people think, feel, and do. Conducting a good survey is more complicated than just asking people questions. It involves asking the right questions, of the right people, in the right way. This course will help you to:

· Develop appropriate sampling techniques

· Create a question pool and response categories

· Understand the benefits and drawbacks of popular online survey services

· Calculate simple statistics and create simple charts and graphs using Excel

· Develop a simple survey report

May: Teens, Libraries & Social Media (Online Discussion)

YALSA and Connected Learning TV will kick-off a month-long series of conversations around teens and the future of school & public libraries beginning May 2, 2013.

YALSA President H. Jack Martin and Crystle Martin, Postdoctoral Researcher for the Connected Learning Research Network, will be the moderators for these free virtual chats, which will look at the roles social media and teens play in the future of public and school libraries. Crystle and Jack will facilitate discussions with Renee Hobbs, Chris Shoemaker, Wendy Stephens, Joyce Valenza and many more about the challenges surrounding leveraging social media in library programs. YALSA members are invited to participate and to share what has or has not been working in their own libraries. Participants will explore best practices from across the globe to implement in their library.

Participants can watch in real time, connect via Chat with others, and ask questions on Livestream, watch live on the Connected Learning Google+ Page, and contribute to the #futureoflibraries conversation on Twitter. Be sure to check the YALSAblog the month of May, where discussions will continue there as well.

Each virtual chat will begin at 1pm, eastern, and you can find out more on each individual series by clicking on the titles below. Be sure to check back to the connectedlearning.tv site for updates on additional speakers for each webinar.

After the last session, connectedlearning.tv and YALSA will put together a free summary report with tools and resources for librarians and library workers to use in their library.
